AIIA VIC Industry Sync – Technology, the Law, and the Role of Government

Wednesday, 23 August 2023

}4:30 PM – 7:00 PM (AEST)

Amazon Office MEL11 – 18/8 Exhibition Street, Melbourne VIC 3000

Overview

In his address to the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), the Victorian Leader of the Opposition, John Pesutto MP, will discuss ‘Technology, the Law, and the Role of Government’.

As technology continues to rapidly evolve, it is critical that industry and government leaders work together to ensure technology can be safely and effectively implemented across various sectors to maximise the benefit to industry, the public, and society.

John’s address will touch on the growing reliance of technology across sectors and how technology can be an effective tool to improve productivity and utility, whilst acknowledging the challenges posed, and the role of the law and governments in addressing these problems.

With a focus specifically on the delivery of government services, John will highlight where governments have implemented technological initiatives successfully, and conversely, where such initiatives have faced hurdles. He will discuss why this may be the case and the scope for future innovation.

He will also explore the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and what this means for the law and governments. In particular, he will discuss the need for an appropriate regulatory framework for emerging and existing technologies, to ensure the benefits of technology can be maximised and the drawbacks reduced.

Ultimately, John will discuss how the Victorian Liberals and Nationals are looking at formulating key policies in the technology space before the 2026 election.
