The Federal & ACT Council of the AIIA is delighted to invite you to attend a highly awaited event featuring the Chief Information Officer of the Department of Defence, Mr Stephen Pearson.
Mr Pearson will make his first address to the AIIA and share his invaluable reflections over the last five years as Defence CIO, where he undertook the monumental mission of setting the direction and driving a program of transformation of unparalleled scale and impact that has only increased in importance with the evolution of the increasingly globally contested geopolitical environment.
Mr Pearson will share his observations of the unique challenges and opportunities of the Defence technology environment, ranging from setting the strategic vision to marshalling through the complexity of execution and transforming the role of industry in delivering major capabilities that provide the supporting environments and the technology edge to enable the Defence strategy of integrated deterrence, shaping and influencing and becoming response ready to fight and win.

Mr Stephen Pearson
The Defence CIO is accountable to the Secretary of Defence and the Chief of the Defence Force to set the strategic ICT direction for the entire portfolio. In addition to setting the strategy, the mandate of the CIO is to provide a modern, secure, sustainable, and scalable Single Information Environment (SIE) to enable ADF operations and support Defence business.
The SIE is always evolving and includes a vast array of Defence computing networks, cyber security capabilities to protect it, thousands of military and business applications and the data that these capabilities generate and share, the strategic communications and spectrum required for warfighting operations and supporting critical interoperability needs with our Five Eyes partners and allies.
The authority of the CIO encompasses all aspects of the SIE capability management including strategy, planning, prioritisation, development, implementation and support. Strong Defence industry support and partnerships are critical to meeting the CIO’s mandate.
