AIIA VIC Emerging Tech, Healthcare and the Care Economy Panel
Overview
This thought leadership sundowner hosted by the AIIA, and its Health Policy Advisory Network, will feature a keynote presentation from the newly appointed Optus Research Chair in Digital Health (La Trobe University), in her first weeks in the role. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion exploring the intersections between emerging technologies and digital health, including remote and virtual care technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G technologies and the role they play in patient care outcomes, primary care, remote patient monitoring, Hospital in the Home and community-based care, and aged care. In the context of a post-Covid health and hospital system, workforce burnout, the acceleration of AI, an ageing population and an economy looking for the productivity dividends that cutting-edge technological solutions can yield, the panel will ask how emerging tech can serve as the key the Australian healthcare system needs as well as societal, skills and systemic aspects. This event is proudly hosted and supported by Optus and will take place in their new facilities in Melbourne for a sundowner function with beverages and light refreshments.
Keynote Speaker
Professor Nilmini Wickramasinghe, MBA PhD
La Trobe University
As of August 1, 2023, Professor Wickramasinghe is the Professor and Optus chair of Digital Health at La Trobe University within the School of Engineering. She also holds honorary research professor positions at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, MCRI, Epworth HealthCare and Northern Health. After completing 5 degrees at the University of Melbourne, she completed PhD studies at Case Western Reserve University, and later executive education at Harvard Business School, USA in Value-based HealthCare. For over 20 years, she has been actively, researching and teaching within the health informatics/digital health domain with over 350 scholarly publications, a patent, 25 books, numerous posters and book chapters and a very successful grant funding portfolio. In 2020, she was awarded the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt award for her outstanding contribution to digital health.

Wendy Chapman
Associate Dean Digital Health and Informatics
University of Melbourne
Wendy Chapman is the Associate Dean of Digital Health and Informatics at the University of Melbourne, as well as the Director of the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health. Prof. Chapman’s research aims to leverage data and digital technology to transform healthcare delivery. She spent two decades developing and evaluating AI / natural language processing algorithms and has led many multidisciplinary programs of work focused on research, education, and application of digital health. Her current passion is how to best design, implement, and validate digital innovations like AI and virtual care in healthcare settings.

Dr Daniel Capurro
Associate Professor
Royal Melbourne Hospital
Dr. Daniel Capurro is an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne’s School of Computing and Information Systems, Deputy-Director of the Centre for the Digital Transformation of Health, and clinician at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. His research focuses on clinical data analytics, clinical process mining, and the validation of digital health interventions. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Digital Health and the American Medical Informatics Association; he is the deputy editor for NPJ Digital Medicine and is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, and Informatics for Health and Social Care.

Dr Samira Hassan
Director, Strategic Data Policy and Governance | Data and Analytics Branch | Health Economics Research Division
Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care
Dr Samira Hassan is the Director of the Strategic Policy and Governance team within the Data and Analytics Branch at the Department of Health and Aged Care. Building on her previous experience developing the Data Availability and Transparency legislation at the Office of the National Data Commissioner where she led the public engagement and consultation processes, her current priority is delivering meaningful COVID-19 data insights using a range of sources. Samira has a lifelong interest in the sciences and the practical application of data insights to drive innovation and holds a PhD in molecular biology and bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering.

Jason has 25+ years of experience in the technology industry and is the Associate Director of Education for Optus Enterprise. He has developed Optus’ National Industry based Education strategy and created a capacity to commercialise and extract value from innovation and research partnerships across Higher Education and Vocational Education institutes. Jason has extensive experience working across many sectors in Optus, including Enterprise, Wholesale and Public Sector channels in Sales and People Leadership, Strategy Development, Transformation for Change and Partnerships for Growth. He brings a deep understanding of how technology and digitisation can drive business transformation and how Academia and Industry can collaborate to deliver on game changing outcomes for the benefit of our national economy. Jason’s experiences are particularly relevant when looking at how educational institutes can use technologies to transform existing processes and practices and become more relevant across industry, government and communities in the global economy. He is a past and current student of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) and La Trobe University (MBA).
