Principal of Techology, Santos

Steven Benn is the Principal for Technology Implementation at Santos. He is responsible for the evaluation, development and introduction of new technologies across the full spectrum of Santos’ operations.

Steve has over 25 years’ experience, originally as a geologist and subsequently as a consultant on technology application within the disciplines of exploration and production. He has worked internationally with oil and gas majors such as BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Statoil, Petro-Canada and ENI.

Steve and his team won the Oracle Oil and Gas Global Innovation Award in 2014 and more recently an Australian Information Industry Award for Big Data Innovation and Big Data in Primary and Industrial Applications for the Predictive Analytics work at Santos.

He has presented on Analytics at ‘IHS Cera Week and more recently at the SPE Intelligent Oil and Gas Symposium in Abu Dhabi where he was also a member of the Programme Committee.

Steve holds a BSc Honours in Combined Sciences, majoring in Geology, from Brunel University and MBA from the University of South Australia, specialising in Business in China including studying at Peking University.

Managing Director, Resolution Systems

Tom Cawley has technical energy experience from well or mine, through processing and transmission, to generation, with an extensive knowledge of energy use in the resources and industrial sectors. He also has a strong exposure to renewables including the design and construction of a pilot biodiesel plant, detailed peer review of a solar flagship CST plant and multiple analyses of renewable options in the industrial and resources sectors.

Tom’s commercial experience includes the purchase and re-development of a gas turbine cogen plant, founding and leading a specialised energy efficiency engineering business for 13 years and recently, the successful founding and funding of a start-up with an efficiency focus. His capabilities in the emerging energy sector are underlined by his election to the well-contested board of the Energy Efficiency Council of Australia three times.

Tom also has significant firsthand experience of innovation within the energy sector, with several new technologies and solutions delivered by his company as well as the new start-up.

Business Development Manager, Esri

Driven by a belief that easy-to-use mapping should be available to everyone in the organisation every day, David is recognised as one of Esri Australia’s most dedicated business development managers.

David has a particular interest in resources, ports, state and local government, and since joining Esri Australia in 2013 has played a key part in numerous projects, including the award-winning Flinders Ports real-time common operating picture.

During his time in the geospatial industry – a period of more than a decade – David has taken on various technical, management and lecturing roles, primarily within the engineering and local government sectors.

David chairs the South Australian spatial industry conference Spatial Information Day and was awarded the SA Spatial Professional of the Year 2016.

Ryan Kris is a business consultant and management information systems specialist. He works hands-on with startups and SMEs on strategy and implementation to improve business performance and get the important work done. With a focus on analytics, business systems with an agile project methodology, Ryan has helped clients role out new systems, products, improve margins and automate processes with software.

Director, Centre for Energy Technology, The University of Adelaide

Gus Nathan is the founding Director of The University of Adelaide’s Centre for Energy Technology and recipient of a Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award from the Australian Research Council. He specialises in the development of innovative technology in concentrating solar thermal technologies, alternative fuels, high temperature minerals processing and hybrid energy systems. Gus is leader of Node 4 of the national Australian Solar Thermal Research Initiative, which aims to lower the cost of both solar power and solar fuels production, and project leader for an ARENA funded project to introduce concentrating solar thermal into the Bayer Alumina process in partnership with Alcoa and Hatch. He is an author of more than 10 patents, including two families of technology in ongoing commercial use, 50 commissioned reports and some 200 international journal and 250 peer-review conference publications.

In Mary’s current role, she is responsible for the business execution of one of BHGE’s significant Oil and Gas regions globally.

This encompasses a portfolio of technology solutions for the industry; from hydrocarbon discovery and development, through to hydrocarbon processing and energy generation.Her greatest passion is the promotion of powerful workplaces that celebrate diversity of thought and nature to drive outstanding industry solutions.

Prior to Mary joining General Electric in 2014, her 30 year industry experience has seen her in several leadership positions at Woodside, including Senior Vice President for their Australian Oil Business Unit and Project Manager for the Pluto Expansion. Before that, Mary undertook managerial and engineering roles in Brown & Root Engineering. Mary chairs the Industry Advisory Committee for Curtin University’s School of Science & Engineering and is co-chair of the Energy Industry Collaboration Group.

Mary is also a director on the LNG Marine Fuel Institute.A fellow of the institute of engineers, Mary holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University College Galway. Mary is a passionate advocate for women, and has mentored a vast number of female professionals both internal and external to GE. She is also the executive sponsor of the GE Diversity & Inclusion initiative.

Matt is a climate scientist, physicist, philosopher and passionate advocate for climate change action and sustainability. Matt has several years of startup experience in areas such as blockchain, electric vehicles, community energy as well as in scientific research and communication.

Principal Strategic Planning Planning (Minerals Australia),  Technology – Strategy and Innovation, BHP

Having started his professional career in the automotive industry, Simon gained experience in a number of industries including agribusiness and utilities sector before joining BHP on the Olympic Dam Expansion project in 2006.

Simon has since held a number of roles in directional studies, project management and long term planning, before moving into the BHP global Technology function in 2016.

He is currently the Principal Strategic Planning for Minerals Australia within the Strategy and Innovation sub-function, and in this role is responsible for working with the Coal, Iron Ore and Olympic Dam Assets to plan the delivery of technology programs that address the strategic challenges of the business.

Dan has over 16 years’ experience in the creative services industry, working in-house and agency-side on award-winning products and campaigns in both the B2C and B2B spaces. Dan is also Co-Chair of the Education Committee for the AADC, a guest lecturer at the University of Adelaide and the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute of Marketing, as well as a speaker on the subjects of digital communications and strategy.
