Keynote Speaker

Hon Tony Simpson MLA, Minister for Local Government; Community Services; Seniors and Volunteering; Youth

The Minister will discuss recent ICT procurement by his Department of Local Government and Communities (DLGC) subsequent to the joining of the two Departments. The challenges encountered in this amalgamation, and the solutions arrived at, will be discussed in the context of opportunities it created for external parties to work with the State Government. He will also discuss the online planning tools that local governments are adopting, using the City of Stirling as an example. The Minister will highlight how many local governments are starting to embrace innovative ICT delivery platforms to better service their ratepayers and at the same time achieve savings on service delivery costs. Finally, using the recent launch of the Drumbeat program, he will illustrate how funding from the DLGC allowed Holyoake to develop an innovative program aimed at engaging with troubled youth, in and out of a school setting, and how this program is now being exported into markets such as the USA.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the Minister.

Hon Tony Simpson MLA, Minister for Local Government; Community Services; Seniors and Volunteering; Youth

A former baker and Shire Councillor, his vision is about our shaping and caring for our community – from the infrastructure and services provided by local government and the community sector, to supporting the great work of volunteers, to dealing with youth issues, and making sure seniors get the support they need.

Every month, he meets hundreds of seniors, community groups, young people and volunteers as he crosses the State.

His goal to meet all of the State’s 138 local governments is on track. He has met 125 councils and visited 72, at last count.

Tony grew up in Wyndham in WA’s north, the youngest of five children, and now lives in Byford with his wife Kim and two daughters. Sometimes he cycles from Byford to Parliament House, for exercise.

Tony was Byford’s baker for 14 years, successfully running his own small business. He is a life member and former president of several community groups and helped establish the first bank in his electorate.

He was elected to Parliament in 2005, after four years on the Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire Council, and became a Cabinet Minister in March 2013.

He is the Member for Darling Range, a large and diverse electorate taking in the Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire, Roleystone, Pickering Brook, Kelmscott, Piara Waters and Harrisdale.

His major project to introduce local government reforms and make councils in metropolitan Perth larger, stronger and more financially sustainable, is on track, with new local governments due to start on July 1, 2015.
