The Honourable Ian Walker MP, Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts
Ian Walker commenced his legal career with prominent Queensland law firm Cannan & Peterson in 1976, becoming a partner in 1984. He practised in the areas of property development and town planning. The firm became Sly & Weigall Cannan & Peterson.
In 2000 he became Managing Partner of the Brisbane Office guiding the Queensland firm to a merger to become the national law firm, Deacons. Ian was a member of Deacon’s National Board and subsequently National Business Unit leader of the Property, Environment, Planning Construction and Engineering Group. Deacons merged with international law firm Norton Rose in 2010, and Ian became Australian Leader of the Government Practice.
He was appointed by the Queensland Labor Government to chair the Ministerial Advisory Committee to review Queensland’s heritage legislation which resulted in wide-ranging legislative reform in 2007.
He later served on the Liberal Party State Executive, as Constitution and Rules Chair, and for some years on the Party’s Policy Committee. In 2009 he was appointed as Honorary Legal Adviser of the LNP and re-appointed in 2010. He retired from this position upon being preselected as the party’s candidate for Mansfield. He was awarded the Federal Liberal Party’s Distinguished Service Award in 2011.
Ian was elected Member for Mansfield at the State Election held in March 2012 and was appointed Assistant Minister for Planning Reform in April 2012. He was appointed Minister for Science, IT, Innovation and the Arts in February 2013
