Session Topic Overviews

eGovernance & eGovernment

As corporates are getting leaner and more efficient using ICT, governments too are using ICT to improve their ability to address the needs of the society, in a more cost-efficient, effective, inclusive and transparent manner. Especially in the developing economies within Asia-Oceania, eGovernance and the modernization of legacy systems in the public sector are likely to be priority areas for governments from now until 2020. This session examines the large opportunity that this presents to the ICT service provider industry and the likely challenges in this area.

Workforce, Skills & Education

The Asia-Oceania region abounds with diversity in its culture, its population, languages and the likes. One of the important differences lies in the quality and volume of workforce and skill-sets available with different countries within the region. As several countries within the region are looking at severe demographic challenges going forward, migration of talent and workforce rationalization become important areas of consideration for the future. In this session, we consider the talent and skill requirements of the IT-BPO industry from now to 2020. What kind of skill-sets would we need to develop / attract in the information and communication era of the future? And how can we, as Asia-Oceania optimize the abundant pool that we hold together as a region and leverage it to sustain our competitiveness and maintain the leading edge?

IT Enabled Services-Business Process Outsourcing

The market for business process outsourcing is large and growing. The opportunity to consolidate processes and relocate them to lower-cost destinations is providing huge cost and scale related advantages to global organizations. North America and Europe are at the forefront of the BPO revolution, and although the Asia-Pacific is yet to embrace the trend in a big way, there is huge potential for the sector going forward. Countries like India, the Philippines, Malaysia and more recently Sri Lanka and Vietnam have caught on to the opportunity early on and are now providing business process outsourcing services to a large number of global companies.

This session will discuss the recent BPO trends, both globally and in the Asia-Pacific. It will discuss the opportunity that it presents to companies in terms of optimizing their costs; at the same time it will showcase the capabilities and maturity available with some of the provider nations today.

Convergence

The global ICT industry continues to see enormous opportunity in the Asia Oceania region, where close to 10 million new mobile phone subscribers are registered every month, and which is home to the world's densest broadband markets and nine out of every ten 3G subscribers.

The unique combination of immense growth opportunity and the technological sophistication of its markets mean that Asia Oceania’s brand of convergence will have a defining impact on the global ICT industry. In this session, we discuss the possibilities that convergence will throw open to Asia-Oceania and its people.

Sustainability & Innovation

Sustainability innovations will drive the next generation of change for the ICT industry and potentially all other sectors. The impact of living in a low carbon economy creates new challenges for society. While we know that ICT contributes to an ‘always on world’. And while the benefits of technology are far-reaching, the amount of energy required to keep out technological devices functioning increases each year. Similarly, lower production costs and rapid technological advancements mean that consumers and businesses upgrade products more frequently, creating new recycling challenges. Environmental sustainability is no longer a choice for ICT companies but a business impetrative.

It is increasingly being acknowledged that ICT can provide a significant transformational role in the innovation process. In this session we will hear from leading Australian experts on what the industry has achieved so far and what the emerging trends are that will propel the ICT industry intro more prominence through leadership in this role. In the Australian context, the roll-out of the national broadband network, one of Australia’s largest nation building projects, the opportunities for leveraging this platform for innovation are significant.

Sustainability & Green IT

This session will provide an opportunity to further explore these matters in more detail and discuss the impact on the Asia Pacific region and ICT industry.

With greater awareness of the problem of climate change and global warming, companies across the world are increasingly realizing the impact that IT can have on the environment. There is an urgent need to move towards ‘Greener IT’. Ways to reduce energy consumption and lower costs by investing in newer and greener hardware and services are being announced. Understanding and acting on the environmental impact and the potential environmental benefits of Green IT are an essential strategic imperative for every organization in the 21st Century. There are two ways in which IT can play a vital role in the current scenario; one by building sustainable, energy and cost effective environment within the firm, and second through the usage of IT as a strategic tool to build solutions for the external environment.

The session will discuss both these approaches from ASOCIO member economies, sharing different perspectives and looking for news ways to collaborate

APDIS was one of the highest profile events held in the Asia Pacific this year and afforded the Asia Pacific ICT industry a great chance to promote our capabilities to our regional neighbours.
